Sais Cortebeeck, Photography
Sais (°1987) studied photography at Sint Lukas, Brussels. In her portraits, she tries to escape from reality. Trough turbid but dynamic portraits she tries to capture the volatility of daily life. Thereby she is always in search of the frequently unnoticed beauty of common objects in our everyday surroundings.
Sais is nominated for the Photo Academy Awards (TPAA) 2009.

Tania Rens, Oil painting on canvas
Tania Rens returns to the tradition of the painted portrait but she does this in her own special contemporary way. Starting from photography, she digitaly transforms the image with respect for the elementary and schematic structure of the face. She then transposes this to paintings. Although the recognition of the portrait is not lost, it is hidden in a dubious perception of shades and shapes.

In her most recent project, Tania Rens cooperates with her daughter, photographer Sais Cortebeeck. Trough multiple exposures on large format film, unique images are formed by one artist of the other. The different superpositioned poses and the unscharpness of the moving model create an abstraction of reality. At one side, there is the harshness of the Black and White process, on the other side there is the softness of haze and movement. To further stress this ambiguity, words and numbers are added to the images that like search keywords refer to the title of the work and also to the immense universe extending outside the print that even can't be captured by Internet search engines. Out of these works of her daughter, Tania selects some details that she transforms in her own style to painted self portraits. In the project, there is a symbiosis of 2 artforms: photography and painting, but also the interaction between mother and daughter. The result is a unique series of works that can't leave the spectator untouched.
